How big is 500 square feet?

500 square feet (46.5 m²) is a 20 × 25 ft space, or a square about 22.4 ft on each side.

500 square feet is a studio apartment. In New York and London it is a normal one-person flat; in much of the United States it is a small one-bedroom or a converted garage.

Twenty by twenty-five feet is the layout that comes out round, and it is a useful one to picture: a living area at one end, a kitchen along one wall, and a bathroom taking a corner. Everything in a 500 square foot home shares walls with something else, which is why storage in this size is usually vertical.

It is also the point where flooring becomes a delivery rather than a car boot: 500 square feet of laminate weighs a few hundred kilograms, and adding 10% waste means ordering 550 square feet — a gap worth knowing before you carry it upstairs.
