How big is 600 square feet?

600 square feet (55.7 m²) is a 20 × 30 ft space, or a square about 24.5 ft on each side.

600 square feet is a one-bedroom apartment: a bedroom with a door, a living room that takes a sofa and a table, a kitchen you can stand in with someone else, and a bathroom.

Twenty by thirty feet is the round layout. City minimums for a two-car garage run from 20 × 20 to 20 × 22 feet (garage sizes), so 20 × 30 is a two-car garage with 8 feet of depth to spare across its back — room for a workbench and shelving, which is how many garages end up being used.

The step from 500 to 600 square feet is the one that buys a separate bedroom, and it is the reason this size shows up so often in rental listings. When you measure an apartment of this size yourself, expect the result to come in a little under the advertised number: the listing usually counts wall thickness that your tape does not.
