How big is 200 square feet?

200 square feet (18.6 m²) is a 10 × 20 ft space, or a square about 14 ft on each side.
200 square feet is a little less than a one-car garage — San Ramon, California, asks for at least 10 × 22 ft inside one (garage sizes) — and close to the main bedroom of a new US home under 2,000 sq ft, which builders put at 223 sq ft (bedroom sizes). Laid out as 10 × 20 feet it is long and narrow; as 14 × 14 feet it reads as a proper square room.
It is also the size at which a space stops being one piece of furniture and starts being a room with zones: a bed and a desk, or a sofa and a dining table for two, fit without either one blocking a door.
For materials, 200 square feet is a convenient number to remember: it is a little over eighteen square metres, and most flooring is sold in boxes covering fifteen to twenty-five square feet, so a room this size runs to eight to fourteen boxes before waste — a part box is still a box.
