How big is 300 square feet?

300 square feet (27.9 m²) is a 15 × 20 ft space, or a square about 17.3 ft on each side.

300 square feet is a studio: one room that sleeps, cooks and sits. It is also about the size of the main bedroom in a typical new American home, which builders put at 312 sq ft on average (NAHB) — so a whole studio covers the floor that a typical new home, about 2,900 sq ft in that survey, gives to one room.

Fifteen by twenty feet is the layout that comes out round. Laid out as 12 × 25 it reads as a corridor with a kitchen at one end, which is why studios this size usually put the bed against the long wall and the kitchen in the corner nearest the door.

Two cars would not quite fit: a parking space in San Diego’s code is 8 × 18 ft, 144 sq ft, and two of them plus the space to walk between them comes to more than 300 (San Diego Municipal Code). For what a room of this size holds, the bedroom sizes page works it out bed by bed.
